OF THE EU?
Increasing Societal Resilience and Coping with War Trauma

2025 Conference in Prague
The European Union (EU) is facing a mental health pandemic. This has been compounded by the impact of both the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. In 2023, 46% of Europeans had experienced emotional or psychosocial problems. During its Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2022, the Czech Republic organised an intergovernmental conference on "Resilient Mental Health in the European Union", putting mental health back at the top of the EU agenda and calling on the European Commission (EC) to take coordinated action. In 2023, the EC presented an EU comprehensive approach to mental health, serving as a foundation for the incoming EU administration. Subsequently, in May 2024, a high-level international conference on innovative practices in mental health was held at the Liechtenstein Palace under the auspices of the Government of the Czech Republic, consolidating the Czech Republic's position as a European leader in this field.
This year's conference held in Prague on 9th June 2025, will further elaborate on the initiatives and sub-themes of the above-mentioned events (e.g. cost-effectiveness) and aims to connect leading scientists and experts with legislators and executive representatives at European and national level. Considering the long-term increase in tensions around the world and the escalation of conflicts in international relations at the regional as well as global level, the conference will also focus on topics related to increasing the mental resilience of society. For instance, the debate will address innovative approaches to the treatment of war-induced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in both military and civilian populations, in countries such as the USA and Ukraine.
